1. Recognizing Predatory Solar Sales Tactics
Unscrupulous sales reps often utilize high-pressure, door-to-door pitches designed to rush homeowners through complicated paperwork. Watch out for these primary red flags:
Escalating Lease Contracts: A lease might sound attractive at an initial $100 per month, but built-in annual rate escalators (often 3% to 5% per year) compound quickly. Within a decade, your monthly lease fee surpasses your original electric bill.
Oversized System Engineering: Representatives frequently attempt to maximize panel count to inflate contract value and commission. Installing more generation capacity than your household requires burdens your roof structure without yielding proportional financial returns.

3. The Forensic Checklist: Protecting Your Property
Before signing any proposal or allowing an installer onto your roof, execute this mandatory verification process:
Obtain Three Independent Bids: Never agree to an unsolicited door-to-door offer on the spot. Gather at least three independent proposals from established, locally licensed contractors (verifying active licensing via CSLB, DCAA, or local regulatory boards).

Solar technology is one of the most effective structural and financial upgrades available for island properties, but a poorly structured agreement can turn a valuable asset into a long-term liability.
