As many of you may have heard, the recent collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge was a wake-up call that resonated across the globe. The incident not only resulted in tragic loss but also highlighted a significant vulnerability in our aging infrastructure. Today, I want to talk to you about the initiative I am spearheading to prevent such catastrophes in the future.

The Urgent Need for Global Bridge Inspection
The world’s infrastructure is aging, and the enormity of today’s cargo ships was not anticipated when many of our bridges were constructed decades ago. This mismatch poses a growing threat to safety. The collapse in Baltimore made it clear: we need to act swiftly to reassess the safety of older bridges. This is why I am calling for a comprehensive global initiative to evaluate the safety of bridges worldwide, with a focus on those built before the rise of modern mega cargo ships.

Retrofitting Our Legacy Structures
Many bridges like the Francis Scott Key were designed in eras with different expectations and technologies. Today, we have the knowledge and tools to retrofit these structures with modern safety measures. For example, installing dolphins and fenders around bridge piers can provide a physical barrier to prevent ships from causing damage. Additionally, employing tie-downs and strengthening bridge decks can enhance the overall integrity of these structures, helping to prevent potential collapses.

Creating a Standardized Safety Protocol
One of the core elements of this initiative is the development and implementation of a standardized protocol for bridge safety assessments. This includes modern ship impact analysis and retrofitting techniques that can safeguard against both direct impacts and the progressive collapses that may follow. This protocol will require collaboration among governments, engineering experts, and construction professionals worldwide.

The Importance of Public Awareness and Advocacy
Raising awareness about the importance of infrastructure maintenance is crucial. Educating the public and policymakers about the risks and necessary precautions for bridge safety can drive home the importance of proactive measures. It is imperative that everyone understands the role they play in maintaining the safety of our shared infrastructure.

Moving Forward Together
The path forward involves all of us. As we continue to investigate the causes and fallout from the Baltimore bridge disaster, let us use this knowledge to better prepare and protect our infrastructure. We can ensure the safety and longevity of our bridges for generations to come, but only if we act now and act together.

I invite you all to join me in this vital effort. For more details on how you can get involved or support this initiative, please visit my official website or contact my office directly. Together, we can transform the way we protect and maintain our bridges, ensuring a safer future for everyone.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for your commitment to making a difference. Let’s build a safer world, one bridge at a time.
